Interpret, review and structure evidence

More sensors do not automatically mean better decisions

A larger monitoring network can still produce weak conclusions if baselines are poor, datasets are inconsistent, alarm logic is unclear or engineering context is missing. GeoSmar therefore starts with the monitoring question and the quality of the available evidence.

Ground conditions and contract requirements must be project-specific.

Ground model

Geotechnical investigation records, stratigraphy, rockhead, groundwater, fill, soft deposits, weathered materials and known geological structures should be reviewed before selecting a monitoring strategy.

Construction sequence

Excavation stages, tunnelling advance, dewatering, temporary works, foundation construction and adjacent activities affect how monitoring trends should be interpreted.

Asset sensitivity

Railways, tunnels, bridges, buildings, slopes, utilities, dams and critical facilities have different tolerances, access constraints and consequence profiles.

Existing instrumentation
